Currently,
the chapter has a number of volunteers in the
Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR) who
counsel Guard and Reserve members who are being
mobilized or demobilized as to their rights and
responsibilities concerning their civilian employment
under the law. They also work with employers who
have employees in the Guard and Reserve to build
support and better relations. SAMOA is also a
supporter of the Boy Scouts in the Savannah area.
The chapter co-sponsors an annual golf tournament
to raise funds for the Scouts. SAMOA awards two
scholarships annually to deserving ROTC cadets
from local universities to help defray the costs
of their education. The chapter also supports “Honor Flight”
through the Middle Georgia Chapter, sending WWII
Veterans to visit the memorial in Washington,
DC.
Our
efforts and support are not limited to these areas,
and we constantly search for areas where we can
be of assistance as well as address the interests
of our membership. The chapter conducts monthly
business/social dinner meetings on the third Friday
of each month with the exception of June, July
and August, when luncheon meetings are held.
Meetings are held at various area restaurants
and banquet facilities and offer opportunities
to cover chapter business as well as fellowship
among members and their spouses. The chapter has
an Auxiliary for spouses which also meets monthly
for lunch. Many of the chapter's dinners are devoted
to special occasions or to honor members. For
example, on occasion, we have had a low country boil
at Tybee Island Beach where we honored each branch
of the service. We hold a Christmas Dinner/Dance
with our friends from the Military Order of the
World Wars where we also collect toys for the
Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program and conduct
a fundraiser for the chapter.
We
publish monthly an informative and professional
newsletter, the "Sentinel," which keeps
chapter members abreast of developments in the
chapter's activities and issues as well as highlighting
items on the national scene. The newsletter also
informs members of the most current legislative
and personal affairs issues. Information concerning
personal finances is provided by experts.
